Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

Rock me. Roll me. Soothe me. Soul me. Hip me. Hop me. Someone, stop me!

Feed me, Seymour!

See if you can procure some tunes from the Johnny Cash "Unearthed" box set. He does some amazing covers. My favorites include Redemption Song (w/Joe Strummer), Pocohontas, You'll Never Walk Alone, and Witchita Lineman.

But the best song in the set is Big Iron. A classic outlaw ballad.

rob: I have all of the American stuff, but I'll see if I can find something from Unearthed. If not, I'll play his covers of "Hurt," "The Beast in Me," and "Bird on a Wire."

fleming: Kicking it now! Ah, MySpace, you have a purpose!

anon: Amfibian is cool, but they're not blowing me away. Ozric Tentacles is very interesting. It sort of walks a fine line between the psychedelic and new age. Does the dude play his guitar with a little metal wand or something? Thanks for the suggestions, as always, my masked friend.

Raoul: Welcome back, my brother. I believe it was Anon who suggested ALO on a Friday Music thread of the past, and I've hearted them ever since. I'm kicking "Maria" now, which is just a killer southern rock song in the vein of many of the legendary acts, in my opinion. I really, really like this band.

And it's not true that I don't like bluegrass! I'm not a major fan, but there is definitely bluegrass that I like. I just have to be in the right mood.

Raoul: I'll have to settle for "Elko" by Railroad Earth. It's pretty cool, but I'd like it better if I had a beer in my hand and and my pals around.

clash: Ah, Clash, you're a fine, fine man. Jeff will take me into the afternoon, and I'll follow him with whatever Traci and Shawn we have lying around.

SCARECROW COLLECTION

Last week while cruising around in Rog's car, I had the chance to listen to a good bit of XM. I heard some Black Flag and thought it was pretty damn good. I think you should try to dig some up and see what you think. Even though HR grates on my nerves on his talk show, his music RAWKS! (I like the talk show too. He just irritates me).

clash: Just spun "Fast Car," which is better than I remembered it, and checked out "Never Yours" to boot. Shawn Mullins is new to me. I found "Shimmer" on YouTube and it's a killer song.

anon: "What Happened to that Boy?" -- wow, I'm not sure about this one. The bird-call thing made me laugh, though!

matthes: I think I mentioned to you once before that I've never gotten around to properly checking out Tragically Hip, so thanks for the good suggestion. I found both songs on YouTube. Not very good recordings, but I do like the songs. Sounds ... well ... Canadian. Am I crazy? (And when I think of "Dire Wolf," I think of this "Dire Wolf.")

anon: Scarecrow Collection -- I like. The guy's voice seems a bit thin for that type of music, perhaps, but I do like it.

dm: I've long wanted to check out Black Flag. The songs on the MySpace page I found -- not sure it was official -- were okay. I'll listen to a full album or two on Monday.
