Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

You name it, I'll play it. But this week, if I may be so bold, I hope some of you will join in with me on the first two songs I'm going to listen to. I'd love to know what you think of them.

First is a mellow song by a band I'm just getting into, the Avett Brothers.

Next is a number by Rufus Wainwright, who's sort of hit or miss for me. This song's a big hit, though. Also super mellow, simple piano, yet somehow epic. This is a live recording from KEXP.

rob: Couldn't find that song, but I checked out their MySpace dealio. Pretty cool.

I'll suggest Poe. I heard her (them?) on one of my fave XM stations, Ethel. I liked it. Kind of trip-hop-ish, like a less mellow Portishead. Also, try to check out some Arctic Monkeys.

dm: I'm loving Poe, thanks. I'll kick some Arctic Monkeys next.

I'm getting over them ever so slightly but when I'm driving or cleaning my album of choice has been "Costello Music" by The Fratellis.

Give 'em a listen.

I read a review about a guy named Bill Callahan in Esquire. He was in a band called Smog, but has since released a solo album. He was compared to Conor and Sufjan.

or take me back to freshmen year in college:

Smithereens and the Connells.

How about a little YES?!?!....

melissavina: I've still only heard a few of their songs, but I really like them. I'll get the full album.

raoul: Checking out Smog now, and I really, really like it. Sort of Nick Drakish and Lou Reedish too. I have a feeling you just turned me on to something good.

anon: Doh! You bastard! Identify yourself! Okay, okay ... I'm listening to "Heart of the Sunrise" right now. This might actually be the best Yes song I've ever heard.

Quint: I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout sharkin'!

Is that you on the profile photo? You're my favourite caped-hero :-)

zee: I'm always looking, brother. I'll check out Big Star straight away.

josh: I'll kick the Jaws theme song next.

missy: If only! I'm afraid I'm quite lacking in the super-powers department. I also like Batman, though, as does our tender hero from A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius J. Reilly, who said:

"Then you must begin a reading program immediately so that you may understand the crises of our age," Ignatius said solemnly. "Begin with the late Romans, including Boethius, of course. Then you should dip rather extensively into early Medieval. You may skip the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. That is mostly dangerous propaganda. Now that I think of it, you had better skip the Romantics and the Victorians, too. For the contemporary period, you should study some selected comic books.... I recommend Batman especially, for he tends to transcend the abysmal society in which he's found himself. His morality is rather rigid, also. I rather respect Batman."

Damn straight about Batman, Ignatius. I'd also point out that Batman does nto have any superpowers either, Sleek.

zee: Of course you're right, pal, but he has a super-will-power.
