Ghost Hunters

I've never had a paranormal experience. I thought perhaps I had when I blogged about a strange flying neon orb back in January, but after careful examination, and with the help of my mother-in-law, I (she) determined that it was probably a paint-ball that missed its target (my car). Later I found out a guy I know who lives by the "incident" has had his car hit by a paintball before. Case solved.

But I'm interested in that stuff, so the DM and I used to watch Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi Channel religiously. Most of the time Jason, Grant and their crew would debunk claims of paranormal activity, but every now and then they'd capture evidence that was pretty compelling.

The best case of this in my opinion is the St. Augustine Lighthouse episode. During their investigation they caught what appears to be a ghost chase up a spiral staircase inside the lighthouse. They clearly hear something, and then the video they capture seems to show someone peeking over the railing, and then moments later, over the railing a couple of floors up. When they make it to the top of the stairs, all they find is door that's locked on the inside with a padlock.

Here's the video from when they reveal the footage to the keeper of the lighthouse. Because it's Youtubed it's not nearly as clear as it looked on my TV screen, but you may be able to get the gist of it:

If you didn't see it on TV, it's probably not that impressive, but it's the closest thing I've ever seen to paranormal activity. It definitely made for a good episode, anyway.

On a side note, I interviewed Jason Hawes for Racer X last year. Turns out he's into dirt bikes. He was a cool guy.

it's definitely not that impressive on the computer, but these guys are pretty legit when it comes to debunking things. if they weren't, they wouldn't have hit TV show on SciFi channel.

the little interns they have working for them are pretty fun to make fun of. the show is kinda turning into more of a reality show with a little drama amongst the cast members.

I like to think that TAPS stands for "Totally Awesome Paranormal Stuff." But it's cool how each episode starts off with them fixing someones plumbing and then they get a call on the "hotline." It's also cool that they say they'll run a thermal scan or an EVP of an area, with a totally straight face. I couldn't do that. But then again, i'm a skeptic.

I'm going to want to start watching Ghost Hunters again soon. As soon as autumn arrives, I'm always looking for ghost stories.

The lighthouse episode definitely freaked me out. If Jason and Grant are freaked out, you know some shit is going on.

Every lighthouse should be so haunted. Jason reminds me of Michael Chiklis and he rides bikes, every ghost hunter should have such a resume.

spooge: We haven't seen much of the show since the second season, but I know what you mean about the younger guys in the crew. I might act the same way if I were in some of the places they investigate in the middle of the night, though.

dm: You are definitely all about the horror.

josh: Glad to see you back, pal. It's also pretty cool that he helps his brother-in-law race.

Sleek: You're the reason I started watching Ghost Hunters, and to be honest, every episode I've watched was a bust. Well, except for this one where they caught video evidence of a bed sheet moving. Nonetheless, I still believe in ghosts.

DM: Already looking forward to autumn? Damn, enjoy the summer before thinking about that! But yeah, I'm looking forward to some ghost stories as well...

billy: I usually hate summer! This summer hasn't been too bad because it hasn't really been blazing hot and humid. No matter what season it is, I'm ALWAYS looking forward to autumn. It's my fave.

bad billy: I guess having so many "bust" episodes goes a long way toward proving that these guys are honest.

I am also a pretty big GH fan, as Sleek knows. I have caught a lot of the Season 3 episodes as well. Its a fun show. I consider myself an "open minded" skeptic. While I love the lengths they go to debunk most hauntings, I so feel they are a little quick to label things "haunted" at time. I also cannot help but wonder if, while their hearts are in the right place, they just don't have the necessary expertise to properly debunk things.
On a similat note, I strongly recommend a podcast (available on itunes) called "The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe." Its quite interesting, and is an excellent lesson in critical thinking and the scientific method. Download a few episodes and check it out.
