Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

And so does Clash! My man is a regular here at RtN, but he doesn't actually have his own blog. He is, however, the host of the biggest internet motocross radio show in the world, DMXS Radio, not to mention he's just a peach of a guy. And Clash is going to host Friday Music this week as I travel to Seattle to watch a championship (or two?) get determined and drink some damn fine coffee.

As I always do when I have a guest host for FM, I offered Clash the opportunity to pick the topic. This was his response:

While it seems like a cop-out, I’ll go with whatever the mob spins….. “People's Choice Awards” Friday Music. I would have gone with the “movie-themed” or “80's...etc,” but to be honest, I like the unpredictable nature from the gang.

Some of the best songs I’ve heard on FM, I’ve never heard before. We will keep it simple and let folks set the tone from their bag of tricks.
So there you have it. It's name your own tune here this week, and Clash is on the receiving end of your love. As always, please post links.

Perfect! I was turned on to a new song after a blog comment conversation about the (non)existence of God. I was hoping for a topic in which I could share this song.

XTC - Dear God

Thanks, Sleek! I hope you have a safe and dry trip my friend.

I look forward to spinning all the music selections this weekend….so people, “Bring it!” Nothing is out of bounds and I welcome any tune, for any reason.

As a small tribute to Sleek, I’ll start of with a few of Seattle’s finest.

Alice in Chains Underrated in my opinion.

Soundgarden

Temple of the Dog A cool mix of vocals.

Malfunkshun

Pearl Jam Grunge defined.

SUPERNOVA are a silly band, but they ROCK.

I saw Ray Davies a few weeks ago and was thrilled when this was the first encore.

Anyone else playing around with Muxtape? Here's the mix I put together last night (that Pucho track is better than morning coffee). Maybe next Friday can be mix day - it's easier than digging around for YouTube clips.

Here goes:

A little Jon Brion. Holy shit, my son and I can't stop watching this video (his excuse... he's only 2 1/2 years old). Weird.

Get Back Loretta.

I am digging Canadian singer/songwriter Rob Szabo lately. This vid was recorded in Parkersburg... BONUS!!!

Lets start with this little ditty.

Here's a great tune from one of the most fun live beands I've ever seen, with one of the best schticks.

Cruss - I always thought of Jon Brion as "they guy who produces Aimee Mann." I never heard any of his stuff at all, and was barely even aware that he did anything aside from produce---Aimee Mann in particular.

zee: He's best known for his work with Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple, but his album, "Meaningless" is amazing. He puts on an amazing one-man-show in LA's Club Largo every week to boot.

Some other great Jon Brion
contributions are/were:
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (band member) and the Grays (band member).

Film scores Magnolia, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees and Punch Drunk Love.

Kanye West - Late Registration and Sean Lennon - Friendly Fire are exceptional as well!

mtb: My first ever FM entry and it’s a hot potato. We obviously won’t debate theological differences here, but I do respect any and all opinions. I have heard that song before, but that’s the first time I’ve seen the video. Powerful imagery and lyrics to go with his determined message, but I could not help but notice that he leaves that caveat of “And if you’re up there….” Either way it’s an interesting tune. I always remember XTC as a band in the New Wave movement way back in the day and have always liked them.

rob zero: Supernova does indeed rock! Don’t make me break out some Chewbacca. I was lucky enough to see The Kinks in 1984 and continue to cycle them through the ipod rotation…. including Low Budget. Well done, sir.

jeffk: I was secretly hoping you would stop by this week with some of your enlightened suggestions. I have been diggin on Nick Cave for a few weeks now and you never disappoint. My wide-open topic was made for your Muxtape and Pucho goes down smoother than 30-year-old scotch. Another cool XTC song and no compilation would be complete without a little Ace.

I’ve become complacent in reaching out for new music and you give me the kick in the ass needed to spark the fire within. I’ll spin the rest this weekend.

crusselldrums: I was aware of Jon Brion’s work with Mann and Apple, but like zee I was not familiar with his other projects. This will take some serious catching up on my part and that crazy video is a great place to start.

Rob Szabo is a good example of why I check out FM every week. I have not heard of him and have loved every song I’ve listened to. Such a truthful presence about him.

zee: One of my coworkers is a big GBV fan and he is always playing them.

I just finished watching the John Adams series on HBO and The Upper Crust Rock & Roll Butler is dressed like the French pre-Revolution bureaucrats. I bet they are good live because if you are sporting those threads, you better ROCK!

anon: I have always related to Snoop for some reason, but that was solidified after seeing him on Larry King. There is no greater example of what is cool and what is not when you see them sitting side by side. Damn, it was awesome!

I'm not good at cataloging music in my head. Heard this great joint today and lost the name, even though the DJ for once (!) identified the artist and made a point to extol his virtue. Damnit.

Rasputina: "Oh, Injury"
I love these girls, and this is one of my favorite of their songs.

Neil Young: "Oh Lonesone Me"
I don't think this one is well known, but I've always liked it.

Catherine Wheel: "Delicious"
Jeff K. turned me on to this band long, long ago.

Clash said...

Sleek: Thanks for checking in on your flock.

I really like the sound of Rasputina. The use of classical instruments is haunting in the cover of the sacred Wish You Were Here. I bet they are a great, intimate band to see live.

Another worthy find by jeffk. The hard guitar edge in Catherine Wheel is kicking with strong vocals. I especially enjoyed Black Metallic and Eat My Dust You Insensitive Fuck.

I have a love/hate relationship with Neil and right now he’s bringing me down.

m@: I feel your pain. That happens to me all the time.

One of these days I will meet deadline but if I had a band I would call it "Late for Supper" because it just seems I am always late, not fashionably but just downright rude late! I feel shame JW

Christ awmighty, what is this? Some goddamn testosterone-fest?

Let's see about that.

If you boys think you can stop swinging your lead around for five minutes, answer me this: who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?

Ah, Erin...So glad you broke up this circle-jerk with some good ol' American Funk.

BTW: Shaft was one badass mofo!

It was a relatively quiet week on Friday Music, as far as the number of suggestions goes, but the music definitely wasn't quiet. What happened to all the girls? At least End of Business swung by there at the end.

Anyway, huge thanks goes out to my pal Clash for picking up the reigns here for me this week. Thanks!

No problemo, Sleek. Glad to help out.

It was just like high school. Girls paid little attention to me there as well. Har!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Hey I loved it! I got to say "dick" and "sex" AND I was the only chick in the whole room!
