Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

We're going to the mountains this weekend to celebrate the DM's birthday and (hopefully) have a weekend of relaxation. I'm excited about it, so I'm in the mood for fun music. Let's go with a simple, repeat theme here: '80s music.

Please post links to the songs you're requesting, and feel free to respond to others' suggestions.

I'll get it started with a classic song by The Cure:

Have fun this weekend my friend.

My suggestion:

Go to pandora.com and create a new radio station called 80s music and see what all comes up.

Welcome, I'm the Chez! Wow, two Chezs up in this joint. While I'm a lover of Pandora, I prefer to get suggestions from humans when it comes to Friday Music. Anything specific you'd like to add to today's playlist?

Damn. I just realized we don't have Xinha on here now, so no hyperlinking. Sorry.

Happy birthday, DM! Aah, the magical '80s. Back when music was not so serious. Back when music was dead serious. How we miss it sometimes. Damn it! tüth+gnail beat me to Bronski Beat! Oh well, much more in the archives...

Eurythmics | Missionary Man - A set of pipes to match that set of stems.

Duran Duran | All She Wants Is - one of the most underappreciated DD tracks. Ever.

This Mortal Coil | Song To The Siren - The 4AD label's short-lived "superband".

Boom Boom Room | Here Comes The Man - One-hit wonders, sure. But what a hit!

Mel and Kim | Respectable - Standard StockAitkenWaterman fare, which means it's instantly catchy.

Peter Gabriel | Sledgehammer - Oh yes, it's white man's funk time!

Hey! I've posted that Fad Gadget song before! It's one of my absolute favourites! Frank Tovey, R.I.P.

I'm gonna be the party pooper, Rock Lobster fans. That song was actually released in 1978 as a single and '79 as an album track.

Ok, now that the nitpicking is out of the way, here are some of my favorite songs from the 80s:

A Million Miles Away

Alex Chilton

Turning Japanese

Hey Electric Orchid Hunter
Brilliant choice on This Mortal Coil! 4AD in general produced many additions to my CD/vinyl collection. I've drawn so much inspiration from 4AD album art and Vaughan Oliver is by far my favourite designer.

OT: (Useless tidbit—Any guy who can shove his testicle through a heart-shaped cardboard cutout and make it look as cool as he did is a-ok in my books. Check out the liner notes for the song "Divine Hammer" on The Breeders "Last Splash". Vaughan Oliver = Genius!)
