Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

I went out for drinks with some friends last night and Mungerphut suggested a great topic for this week: The Elements--earth, air, fire, and water. So let's see what music you guys come up with for that.

You can link if you want to, you can leave your friends behind. 'Cause your friends don't link and if they don't link, well, they're no friends of mine.

I'll get you started with Radiohead's "Airbag".   I'd love to suggest Colin MacIntyre's "The Water", but there's it's nowhere to be found on the interwebs. Since the album is titled The Water, how about a song from it?

Hmmmm. Fire? How 'bout one from one of my old faves, Prodigy?  That leaves Earth. The only thing that I can think of is another Radiohead tune--"Subterranean Homesick Alien," or the song it's name was taken from.

Simply the best. Ring of Fire

I watched Apocalypse Now the other night and this song always reminds me of the Vietnam era moviesLight My Fire

Cinder and Smoke, by Iron and Wine

Don't forget the whole album Inferno, by LJTWF

BTW: Nice play on the Safety Dance, Sleek!

A few more....These are all obvious and older, but classics are just that for a reason.

Leonard Cohen never disappoints. Who by Fire

Fire = The One I Love – REM (the chorus, “Fiiiiiiireeeee”)

Water = Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads (“Water dissolving...and water removing; There is water at the bottom of the ocean; Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean; Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean! “)

Earth = Long Live Rock- The Who(not my favorite Who song at all, but very geological)

Air = The Air Near My Fingers – The White Stripes

Billy Joel We Didn't Start The Fire - I used to spin this one endlessly when it first came out.

Portishead Deep Water - like the rest of their new record, this amazing little track can't be classified.

Sparks Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth - one of the strongest melodies in existence.

David Bowie Wild Is The Wind - a great tribute to Nina Simone, really.

Earth

Wind/Air
(Tell me that this doesn't sound like Radiohead)

Fire

Water (metaphorically)

I actually meant to use this version for Fire

Thinking about musicians, artist and those who rock our ears, it looks like Fire is definitely a favorite companion. Although I enjoy the blues moods of ol' man Johnny, like Ring of Fire at times I have come to discover and really enjoyed the cooked tunes of Vampire Weekend recently. Awesome indie rock with some spices from Africa and some ska. New York, Cape Cod, oceans, water and drinks (water again...)
A must listen too.

Vampire Weekend

Mansard Roof

"Lights by the ocean
A westerly motion that moves California to sea
Eyes like a seagull
No Kansas-born beetle could ever come close to that free"

Happy weekend!

dm: Airbag -- that's what I'm talking about! You know how to get things started for me; Colin -- this is one of my least favorite songs on the new album, but dang, there's just not much posted out there right now; Prodigy -- never really felt these guys too much. Dudeman's sorta goofy; Subterranean/Subterranean -- not many songs could follow Radiohead and hang, but Bob can hang with anyone. Very, very strong finish, DM.

clash: Cash -- The legends continue. I expected to hear this one today and was treated to it nice and early; Doors -- these guys always seem to get me going. Jeff K and some others I know don't like the Doors at all, but I've always been a fan. I know what you mean about the movie thing, too.

Jamie: Welcome! Iron and Wine -- you know, I love me some ubermellow music (Damien Rice/Swell Season/Cat Power), but for some reason I just cannot get into I&W. The live version of this song from Bonnaroo is nice, though. And I would pay good money to have a Lester James and the White Flames album. I wish I had a connection.... ;)

Not smart enough to -------->
link posts.

Pulling tunes from the CD in my time machine:

"Love is Thicker Than Water" Andy Gibb

"Planet Earth" Duran Duran

"Sailing" Christopher Cross -- wind references

"Rock of Ages" Def Leppard -- lots of fire references, pyromania, etc.

clash: Leonard -- If I'm half as cool as Leonard Cohen is when I'm his age, I'll be in pretty good shape. Dylan -- a nice, early recording of a simple folk song. I really think his voice was sweet back then.

munger: REM -- nice thinking outside the box here (going w/ lyrics instead of title/band), with a classic pop song to boot; Talking Heads -- I didn't get into this band hardcore until about a year ago, but I've fallen in love with them since. What a band; The Who -- yeah, this band has just never done much for me. I can't stop hearing that "Tommy, can you hear me?" garbage; White Stripes -- I like the Raconteurs better, but this is a decent song and it certainly fits the category.

$: I cannot believe you just busted out the girls from Scooby Doo -- that movie was a huge hit in our house for a long time, and Annelies is a fan of the Hex Girls.

crusseldrums: The Tractors -- I don't remember the band, but the song sounds familiar; Mat Kearny -- two comments: 1. I really like this, and 2. It sounds almost exactly like Coldplay; Hot Hot Heat -- I like this band and this song, but I totally though you were dropping some Arcade Fire; Aretha Franklin -- that's an awesome version, and I've never heard it before. I'm going to sound like a dumbass here, but I didn't know Aretha could play piano like that. I'm not sure I knew she played at all, to be honest.

geto boy: Earth, Wind and Fire -- I figured these guys would be suggested, even though I ran the image of them in the post. I think this was a mandatory suggestion, given the category; DMB -- a great song from their best album, IMO.

$: Northern Kentucky Brotherhood Singers -- what a treat. I would totally go see this group.

teoh: Billy Joel -- I listened to this so much when it came out that I still remember most of the words. I actually don't think this song is a bad as most people say it is; Portishead -- stopped me in my tracks. I listened to this three times in a row. Wow; Sparks -- this is new to me, but I'm thinking it probably shouldn't be. It's Queenish in places, I think. I'm surprised they're American for some reason; Bowie -- he's always welcome on Friday Music.

SleekPelt said...

rob zero: Neil Young -- one of my favorite songs off of perhaps my favorite Neil Young album. It's a great performance too; The Hollies -- heck yeah it sounds like Radiohead. So much so, in fact, that Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood from the Hollies share a songwriting credit (and royalties) with Radiohead on it; Bruce -- I like this one better than the one you meant to post!; The Ventures -- man, those are some happy mofos right there.

shenzi: Welcome back! "Mansard Roof" is pretty cool, but I much prefer "Oxford Comma" from the first link you posted. I don't like this band name much, but I look forward to checking out more of their music.

anon: I don't care if it's topical or not, Dylan is always fair game on Friday Music. This might be the first time he's been suggested three times by three different people.

Fun fact: Albert Hammond, who wrote "Air That I Breathe" and a bunch of other 70s & 80s pop hits, is the father of the guitarist from The Strokes. Their singer is also a product of a music industry exec. Gee, wonder how they got a contract...

tüth+gnail: Dead Can Dance -- I had no idea they sounded like this. I IMDBed that movie and it looks killer, I will definitely check it out; Tom Waits -- oh, hell yes; Nirvana -- this band will never age; Gordon -- I remember this one from my childhood too. It's never been my favorite song, though I'd be interested to know why it's haunted you.

zee: Earth, Wind and Fire -- but they had to be done. They just had to; Deep Purple -- man, I'm glad you posted a live version of this song. I'll be okay if I never here there studio version again. I enjoyed watching it live, though.

~d: Holy cow, look who's here! Nice to see you again -- I hope all is well. (DM says hi!)

day: MC 900 Foot Jesus -- I really like this song, and it's a great pick for fire. Seems like I've heard of this guy before, maybe even here on Friday Music.

helen mansfield: Andy Gibb -- wow, this is terrible! (Sorry if it was a serious suggestion!) It's funny, when I was a little kid I loved the Andy Gibb song "Time is Time" and spun the 45 over and over. I listened to it today for the first time in years and it was just terrible too!; Duran Duran -- now that's what I'm talking about. This is one of my favorite of their songs. I like them much more now than I did when they were popular; Chris Cross -- an encore! Is there any song in the history of mankind that better defines soft rock?; Def Leppard -- thanks you! I could not believe nobody was dropping Pyromania! A killer (and fitting) suggestion, Helen Mansfield.
