Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

And so does Teoh, who returns for another round of hosting RtN's weekly playlist. As always, the guest chooses the topic, and Teoh got a little crazy with this one. He said:

"I'd like to mix it up and see people's playlists consist of one each of:

- songs about money
- rock chicks who look scary in their music videos
- the whitest rap, like, ever
- music made famous by a commercial"

Interesting -- this one is pretty out there. As always, linkidy link link link.

Money
Bon Iver - "Lump Sum"
I discovered this guy through Vesper de Vil.

Rock Chick
Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics - "The Damned"
Hey, you asked for it.

White Rap
Zee and Lanay - "Wedding Rap"
Best thing I ever saw at a wedding. Attaboy, Zee.

Commercial
I can't really think of anything here, so I'm going to go with music made famous by a TV show.
Billy Vera and the Beaters - "At This Moment"
I really like this guy. I'm glad he got one to take. Thanks, Alex P. Keaton.

Money
I think this might be about money...

Rock Chick
Holy gross... this video made me want to cancel VH-1 Classic at 3am!

Whitey
This guy probably has an amazing car detail shop somewhere! (no offense meant to any car detailers on here)

Commercial
This was huge for Feist!

I'm going for a combo--- here is rock chick singing about getting filthy rich.

Insane white boy rap. I SO admire their DIY attitude of this whole thing--from concept to effects.

Sleek-thanks for the shout-out on the wedding rap!

Nice to see this guy making all kinds of bank.
This song has been on at least 3 or 4 different commercials over the past few years.

Ooops..I almost forgot that the White Boy rap was supposed to be pathetic. Here is another one. Keep in mind that Youtube threw the audio and video out of synch for some reason....trust me, it was perfect when it was uploaded.

crusseldrums: I may never forgive you for Nina Hagen.

sleekpelt: Bon Iver is sweet, although he looks like he spent the night in a hedge. Wendy O. Wiliams is a woman?! Yup, that was pretty white, especially the bride's bit, lol! Never heard of Billy Vera - had to Google him. So this was used in Family Ties, huh? Maybe I was too young.

rob zero: dude, Ray Charles was just the ticket this morning - that's a cool track. The Lunachicks were kinda fun, but Dan Akroyd is downright hilarious. Tom Hanks for whitest rapper so far! The Clash: they were never all that punky to me, because the music is just so catchy and agreeable.

crusseldrums: Thanks to Average Homeboy, we're friends again.

crusselldrums: The O'Jays are superfunky. Looks like songs about cash stir up the soul today. Nina Hagen has the most severe facial expressions. What a talent. Hahaha! Poor Average Homeboy, that was reaaaalllly baaaad. And not in a good way. Feist: I would never have known about her if it weren't for Apple.

moneytastesbad: Never heard Warren Zevon' speaking voice - so deep! Nice song. L7 rocks out. How does the lead vocalist do tat weird vibrato thing? The Wall Street Wrappers are gonna be in my head all day now. 'Do the Wall Street Strut!' This was also kinda about money, y'know. I quite like Röyksopp - it fits the Geico commercial really well.

zee: Texas Terri: now that's one scary rock chick. Lord of the Rhymes: it's a little like the Beastie Boys of Middle-earth. Not bad, actually, although the subject matter is so very white. Iggy Pop's just the best. Thank you for the live version. He's come a long way from Bowie having to sing his songs just so he can pay the bills with the royalties. And lastly... it seems someone has Marshall Mathers aspirations. Your wedding rap was still the best, though. Get your good woman to do another duet.

The Flying Lizards Money (That's What I Want - There's a million versions out there, but I like this one in particular.

Toyah It's A Mystery - She *does* scare me a little.

Pet Shop Boys West End Girls - Wins hands down as the whitest rap ever, because Neil Tennant is just so darn... British.

Goldfrapp Lovely Head - This has been used in several commercials over the years to flog everything from cell phones to SUVs. Watch what happens when she moves over to the other microphone.

I posted the Flying Lizards' "Money" some time ago for my favorite cover.

They are so unashamedly campy, I love it.

I love "This Is the Day" by The The for commercial song for M & Ms.

teoh: Great call on the Pet Shop Boys!

I thought of Blondie's very early rap effort. She could also double as a scary rock chick over the years.

helen mansfield: someone else who actually knows about The The! I didn't know it was in an M&M commercial, but it's totally sweet vintage synthpop! I think I love you...

clash: I was so hoping someone would take the bait and put that track up here, and you didn't disappoint! It contains, after all, the über psychedelic white rap part by Chris Stein. Go here for a trippy live cover by Erasure, featuring Vince Clarke on the rap!

TEOH:

{blush}

Well, we are both "Roosters" and love Depeche Mode. I think it could work.

;o)

teoh: Your link did not work, but a quick search of YouTube and I found that little nugget.

Nice cover!

Oops - I am special. That is indeed the link, clash! Thanks!
