Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

I think I'll start this week's music post off with a little playlist of my own. Feel free to check this stuff out and post your thoughts.

"Brand New Key" -- Melanie Safka
I heard this song on an oldies station tonight and really liked it.

"Movin' Out" -- Billy Joel
Live from a BBC session in '78. Nice.

"Hyberballad" -- Bjork
The Queen of the World.

"Watching Xanadu" -- Mull Historical Society
One of my favorite musicians, but nobody here in the States knows him.

"Paranoia in B Flat Major" -- The Avett Brothers
I'm semi-obsessed with this band right now. I love these guys' voices.

"Dirt" -- Nine Inch Nails
I was just in the mood for it.

"Sari" -- Nelly McKay
This girl is out of control. I like. Ever hear anything quite like this?

What's next? I love links.

Melanie is great. There are lots of better songs by her than "Brand new key" though.

Please help get her into the rock and roll hall of fame by visiting my site. http://LeHerIn.org

Thank you,

jim baldwin of spakane wa: Welcome! The purpose of my Friday Music posts is for other people to determine the music I listen to as I end my week. I'll take your post as a nod for more Melanie Safka. I respond to all suggestions, so feel free to check back in a few days if you're interested in what it does for me. Thanks for stopping by!

Ooh, supercool suggestions, Sleek! Never heard of Melanie Safka - great suggestion. Wow, what a superb rendition of Hyperballad, one of my favourite Björk tracks ever. And the drummer is amazing. I like this Mull Historical Society track; never heard of that either, but it's so catchy. I'll need to check out some more. On to my suggestions:

Finley Quaye: Sunday Shining - A good track to start the weekend on, no? It never fails to make me smile.

Jenny Wilson: Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward - Offbeat electro, but the video is pretty interesting.

Depeche Mode: Walking In My Shoes - My favourite band in the whole of existence. And my favourite video, at that. Deserves to be played at indiscreet volumes.

Marty Robbins: El Paso -
Just discovered this guy recently. Why is country so filmic?

Liars: Houseclouds - The beatbox sounds a little like The Stone Roses. Ooh, in fact...

The Stone Roses: Fool's Gold - A good track to end the weekend on, yes?

hey sleek,

i was actually impressed with that Bjork song as I am no where near a fan, but perhaps I will give her more of a listen now.

Avett Brothers: they are right down my alley. Come out with strings like Banjo and the like and you have my attention. Will keep my eye out for their west coast tour.

I sent you and DM a little something. Here is the song I have been playing from a very solid album you don't have but, you did turn me onto these guys.

As I’m sure you know, I’m a big Bjork fan too. And if I recall correctly I went to one of here first ever solo shows at the then Town and Country Club in London (it was billed as her first, but it was so good it can’t have been).

As much as I like the Melanie Safka tune I can’t get this out of my head. It was a massive hit over here.

But obviously that isn’t one of my suggestions this week.

I’ll start with Groove Armada and this beautiful little ditty.

Then liven you up with Basement Jaxx, and this freaky video. Great night out song!

The Sugababes are a middle of the road girl group now, but their first single from a few years back, promised much more. Mind you only one of the original line-up is left now.

I‘ll sign out with St. Etienne,

Aah, Matt A, those are some excellent, excellent suggestions; some of my favourite tracks! I love those Groove Armada and Basement Jaxx tunes, perfect for "after-hours" grooving. And how cool were the Sugababes back in the day? The newer stuff is alright, but it's nothing like that first single. Respect!

Sleek,

I’m living off your ear today.

Ah, the worthy Melanie. I enjoyed that classic.

Early Joel, prior to “We Didn’t Start the Fire” daze, is always welcome. He is an amazing musician as well. Spun up Only the Good Die Young to boot.

Bjork is more than the infamous goose dress. Ha. I just recently watched an SNL rerun and also enjoyed those two performances.

Thanks for the introduction to Colin McIntyre. I watched a few more of his videos and dug The Final Arrears in addition to your MHS recommendation.

I wasn’t sure when the Avett Brothers started, but they can jam and the hula hoop beverage transfer was a nice addition to the video.

I’ve always been a NIN fan and that song resonated with me early on and will live forever after Cash made it his own.

I listened to Nellie McKay’s song and was a bit puzzled. Then I slammed three Red Bulls and it made perfect sense!

Thanks for today’s suggestions my friend.

jim baldwin of spokane wa: Melanie Safka -- I love this woman. I watched a few of her live performances on YouTube and really dig them. This one is epic.

olive: I took your post as an Avett Brothers bid and listened to Emotionalism twice today. Take care of my wife tonight!

teoh: I'm glad you liked them. Gotta say, though, the available videos don't fully represent Colin MacIntyre (formerly Mull). You must get his album This Is Hope. Trust me.

Finley -- I like! Agreed, it's good weekend music; Jenny -- The song doesn't do much for me, but the video is definitely cool; Depeche Mode -- two songs in row by them that I've liked pretty well; Marty Robbins -- this song is a USA classic. And maybe because western movies and TV shows used to be so big?; Liars -- this song sounds a bit Beckish to me, I like. Dude likes that cat!; Stone Roses -- This is one of those bands I haven't heard as much as I should have, so good suggestion. Thanks!

vesper: Great list. Eminem -- dude can rap. I like Dido's voice, too. Kicked this one from my iPod; Sunset Rubdown -- sounds really interesting, but the only recording I could easily find of this song wasn't all that great; Badly Drawn Boy -- this song is cool, but it doesn't sound as distinctly BDB to me as some of his other stuff. Cool movie; Mazzy Star -- ah, the band my wife and I listened to on our first ... date. I love them; Patsy -- I found a YouTube video of somebody actually playing this song on a record player. Appropriate medium for this great song. Thanks!

anon: You know, Phish just doesn't do much for me these days. I saw them live a few times in college and had fun, though. Thanks for the fond memory.

rd: I got the package, brother, thanks! Travis was the first band my oldest shorty ever heard. Nice! I answered your link question on the phone, but in case anyone else is interested, the link should look like this: TRAVIS. Glad you're digging the Avett Brothers.

Looks like it's cutting off the end of the link, but all I did was replace the [ ] with < >, and added a quotation mark directly after the URL.

matt and melissavina: I'll do your this weekend -- thanks!

clash: Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you liked some of that stuff.

Sleek -- You need to come see the Avett Bros. in Huntington on 3/2/08. Great small club about 4 doors over from my office. Scoop up a Lewis amd come visit.

I suppose it's Sunday already... just listen to this anyway. If you don't like her after listening to these clips, there is something wrong with you.

k.d. lang sings Leonard Cohen’s 'Hallelujah'.

k.d. lang sings Neil Young’s 'Helpless'.

k.d. lang sings 'Barefoot'.

Brilliant voice. Hope you enjoy it.

er... something wrong with 'you' as in 'whoever is reading this'

chud: Sunday night could pose a problem but I'll see -- we're either going there or to Kent on Saturday. We'd love to see the show with you, so we'll see....

IF: I like k.d. lang. I checked out the Neil Young covers here, and "Barefoot" and "Hallelujah" are awesome. Her voice is unbelievable.

josh: I'm excited to read this blog; I've seen her around before.
