Friday Music

It's Friday. You know who needs music?

My friend The Electric Orchid Hunter. He's going to do what I normally do on this weekly post: listen to every music suggestion and post his thoughts. I'm stoked that he's being a good sport about my request for a substitute. (I'm not actually going anywhere; just wanted to try something different.)

So here's how we'll do it this week. Feel free to post any songs you want -- links are always appreciated, and I bet Teoh will think so too -- but try to leave at least one song under this theme: great driving songs.

I hope everyone who stops by RTN will join in this week. Oh, and if you want to read some exceptional writing about things you probably didn't know you'd be interested in, I seriously suggest checking out Teoh's blog, Eclectic Epiphytes and Electrophoretic Epigrams. It's one of the best blogs I've ever read.

Great theme, Sleek! I'll have my auscular implements glued to RevNum-FM this weekend, and will tell the contributors what I've thought in a hopefully non-boring way. Let the broadcast begin!

Neutral Milk Hotel
Holland 1945
You probably know this band, Teoh. People either hate them or love then. A few years ago I was at our local coffee shop telling the barista how much I liked them and the dude beside me rolled up his sleeve and showed me an NMH Aeroplane tattoo.

The Flaming Lips
"Do You Realize?"
This song is trancelike, and I think the simple and true lyrics are strengthened by that. I love this band.

The Avett Brothers
Will You Return
These guys mix up some very cool influences. I think it gets better as the song progresses. This is the band I've been listening to the most lately.

I'll have three more tonight, but that's a start.

sleekpelt: Neutral Milk Hotel - Never heard of these guys before. I quite liked the Latin-y brass in this song. Would be good on the road to San José;
The Flaming Lips - I quite like them, dreamy indeed. There's some interesting stereo effects on the main guitar line. Suitable for a drive through big tree country;
The Avett Brothers - Erm, not too many thoughts here, really. In general, I'm not a fan of the rock banjo, but it's alright, I suppose. We'll listen to it when we drive through North Carolina ('cause that's where they're from, evidently).

A little new and a little old....?

Junior Boys - Like a Child

The Knife - Got 2 Let U
this song MUST have been written with my husband and i in mind... perfect music for driving to the after party!

Joy Division - Disorder ... @#$!?! ian curtis is hot. highly recommend "control', the movie that just came out about him.

The Smith's - The Headmaster Ritual
(im a big smiths fan... you'll see!)

The Jam - Funeral Pyre Promo

The Smith's - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
The PERFECT driving song... love the lyrics.

How 'bout some Gorillaz.  Feel Good Inc.  and  DAREMaybe some Super Furry Animals?  All the songs on their myspace page are really good, so I won't recommend one in particular.  This live Beirut performance is one of my all-time faves.

*dalyn: We have identical taste in music! You must be psychic or something!
Junior Boys - cool band (and they're on Domino Records, home of Franz Ferdinand). Will buy their album after hearing this. Perfect for driving through any desert early in the morning after a great night out;
The Knife - they are hilarious and disturbing at the same time. Great analogue funk suited to the purpose you stated;
Joy Division - You've seen Control? I haven't been able to locate a cinema in this one-horse town that screens it. JD always makes me melancholy. Have it playing while driving around in a new city you just moved to;
The Smiths - One of my favourite songs, period. It's the wordless, wailing chorus, isn't it? It brings back memories of driving around in Johannesburg, actually;
The Jam - Strange how this old stuff suddenly sounds quite contemporary again. Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys come to mind. We'd put this on loud, but the car needs to be filled with people;
The Smiths (again) - The most suited to the theme, for sure. Morrisey has a knack for combining quite dark lyrics with a sweet Johnny Marr melody. Listen to this while driving home from a club where you didn't meet the person of your dreams.

anonymous: I think your link's dead, actually.
Beck - I really like this. To me his big voice doesn't fit his slim frame. Suitable to a most diverting evening of barhopping on the Sunset Strip.

the dalai mama: - seems like you have a penchant for mammals...
Gorillaz (double bill!) - Feel Good Inc. is a great driving song, especially if you've got a convertible, and DARE is a respectable blend of disco, hiphop and bizarre. Good for driving in costume and full make-up, en route to some fancy dress event;
Super Furry Animals - Large, comfortable tunes: I'd want to be in the back seat, looking out the window and listening to these, as we drive home from a great live concert;
Beirut - Ooh, I'd never heard of them before! Loved the accordion, pefect for a leisurely ocean drive on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean.

getto: I see a clash in taste coming. Hope I can salvage something...
Tom Cochrane - A fun piece of rock, which will definitely feature on the road to Memphis. And he mentions Mozambique in the lyrics, too!
311 - Erm, yeah, not really a fan of this style of music, sorry. It'll probably be playing when one of my more 'progressive' friends are behind the wheel, en route to the punky Nile Crocodile in Pretoria, my home town (look it up);
Spacehog - I like how this song lifts in the chorus: early morning on the highwayn (with the moon still out) music;
Soul Asylum - They're on that interface between grunge and foot-tapping poprock here, and they ride it exceedingly well. A song for dusty backroads;
The Flaming Lips - How come they're always so much fun? Should have it blaring from the car at a gas station in order to unsettle the little old ladies returning from the Royal Agricultural Fair;
Rancid - I didn't enjoy this: suppose I'm just not punk enough. Would hear this coming from adjacent cars stopped at red lights on a Friday night. And then roll up the windows.

zee: My, that's a big sandwich you've got there.
Doomed to Obscurity - And I can see why. I found the track 'Vernon Howell' the most listenable: it actually had a rather enjoyable guitar riff going there. I didn't like the vocals so much. Perfect aggro music for when you're on the highway in peak traffic, trying to get to the airport in time to catch an important flight.

reply to this comment, "Rancid - I didn't enjoy this: suppose I'm just not punk enough. Would hear this coming from adjacent cars stopped at red lights on a Friday night. And then roll up the windows."

no offence... but my thoughts EXACTLY! eveyones got their own groove though... cheers! *d

I was just throwing some Rancid out there. Ouch ;(

p.s. TEOH- great job on the Friday Music post.

Thank you so much - I have a lot of "sleek expectations" to live up to! And I don't mean to imply that Rancid is no good, it's just not part of the constellation of tunes I (and dalyn, it seems) tend to enjoy.

Now for my own suggestions (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Depeche Mode: Never Let Me Down Again - Because it makes me drive too fast, and because it starts with the lyrics "I'm taking a ride with my best friend". Good for any road, anywhere, under all weather conditions and... erm, self-medications. Beat that.

Depeche Mode: Behind The Wheel - The driving theme continues (even in the music video). Good for when there are good looking prospects in the passenger seat.

TEOH: Actually, I linked you to the MS page before I learned that the stuff on there is new demos done with a new singer...the stuff by them that I am really enjoying right now is there last album with a former singer. Heavy power-pop, much more listenable. I hope they get back to where they were.

Awesome job, Teoh! I knew you would be great at this; way better than me. Great comments on everything. Thanks so much for humoring me, it was quite a commitment. I've been working constantly lately and have had no time to add more songs to this post, but if you're still game, I'll add a few more for you. I'll also comment on your songs when I can find a few minutes of life to spare.

geto boy: Totally digging the Rancid! Thanks, I needed that!

Thanks for the endorsement, Sleek.

Note to self: Make sure you respond to comments from 'Reversing the Numbness' on Saturday - Thursday.

After reviewing what people are throwing out there, I realize I am totally out of the loop as far as the popular vote.

But...

Eff all of you... especially Dalyn who will never let me hear the end of it. Watch this:

Jill Scott - He Loves Me

IF: I like this lady. You posted one of her songs before, I believe.... Pipes, she has.

teoh: Apparently I lied about adding more songs. I just haven't had free time lately. Thanks again for doing this for me; much appreciated.
