Kriss-Krossed With Christopher Cross

One of the DM's guilty pleasures is General Hospital, and this means that I get to experience the joy of watching Tivoed episodes many nights in bed. It's insane to me, but I cope by coming up with nicknames for people on the show (Emily is "Mushmouth," Nikolas is "Poor Man's Tom Cruise," and Patrick is "Rick Springfield's kid" -- and I just had to ask the DM their real names) and repeatedly making cracks like, "Oh, my god, that ghost is still on the show? Are you kidding me?"

The other night we got to talking about Luke and Laura, and that reminded me of the Christopher Cross song "Think of Laura," which was featured on the soap when I was a kid. Remarkably, the DM doesn't remember the song, so I went to CC's MySpace dealio and was able to play it for her. Then we checked out his MySpace fan-page dealio and spun Arthur's Song for a few seconds, because the DM remembered that one.

I know he had some big hits, but I must say I was surprised that his songs were played more than 200 times on these two pages today alone! I mean, who goes to Christopher Cross's MySpace dealio and plays "Think of Laura"? Who?

Well, besides me, I mean.

Let's go ahead and just clear this up. I don't think of GH as a guilty pleasure. I'll tell anyone that I watch it, and I don't give a rat's ass what they think. I've watched it for damn near 24 years now. (Yes, I really was in 5th grade when I started.) That was several years after the big Luke and Laura story, so that's my excuse for not knowing the song. I can't believe I don't remember it from radio play, but the only Christopher Cross song I remember are "Sailing" and "Arthur's Theme." Both of which I really dig.

Any other GH fans here on RtN? Come on! Admit it!

I loved GH...during the Luke & laura (& Spencer!) era. It peaked for me when that trio was on an island with a villian who was building a machine that controlled the weather. Awesome. When Soaps go sci-fi, everyone wins!

I do recall that there was a top-40novelty song about GH around that time as well. Some female rap song.

Oddly, I don't recall the CC song either, though.

Oh Sleeky... and you were embarrassed because you admitting to watching American Idol! Dude, you know all of the characters NAMES on GENERAL HOSPITAL. LMAO.

They should bottle and sell whatever the catering puts in their food to keep those older characters alive. I mean come on.....Some of them could have possibly served in the Civil War (like firing the first shot at Fort Sumter) and even though they are VERY gracious with the lighting, there are a few that make Keith Richards look like Brad Pitt. My mom still watches it and I remember as a kid giving her “quiet time” when it was on.

I watched something about CC on TV not long ago and he still has a Manilow like cult-following and stills plays. Strange, but he had OK pipes for that type of singing and I’m sure that subliminally I would know most of the lyrics to Sailing.

At least its not a post on Kriss Kross - anybody remember them? Sorry, I've never watched GH, so I'll just sit here in the corner for a while...

I come here not to judge. Peace Trails JW GH? CC 200 hits a day? However he did have a great beard. I go now.

dm: You're absolutely right, it is not a guilty pleasure for you. I've never met anyone in my life who truly does not give a rat's ass about what anyone thinks, to the extent that you don't care. It's a great quality.

zee: I'm surprised you don't remember "Think of Laura"! Did you listen to it on CC's MySpace dealio?

IF: Ha! As the DM will confirm, I do not know the characters' names! It's actually amazing how I could have seen the show probably hundreds of times, albeit typically peripherally, and still I never know anyone's name. I always just use the silly names I make up, i.e. Mushmouth, so named because of that shiny, gushy lipstick she wears.

clash: One look at his MySpace dealio and it's clear he's still got his share of fans. If he invested his dough, he's probably in fine shape these days.

teoh: Do I remember Kris Kross? Hell yes! I'm such a fan, in fact, that I wear all of my clothes backward to this day. Seriously, though, I really hope these guys saved their money.

fleming: Well said.

josh: Your hesitancy to judge is one of the qualities I like most about you.

OH how your world mirrors mine my brotha. GH has been a constant in our house since C and I got together. one of my own nicknames is for Scotty Baldwin whom I call Bert because his egg shaped head resembles his doppleganger from Sesame Street.

badbilly: Sleek is right. Laugh all you want. I don't give a rat's ass.

IF: I say the same thing sometimes!

rd: OMFG! I'm dying here! Bert! That's great. Sometimes when I'm trying to tell Sleek it's okay to watch GH, I'm like, "RD watches it too. Jeesh!"

SleekPelt said...

if: Doh!

rd: My brother, I've missed you on RtN. Fortunately we'll be seeing you in just over a month. One day I'm going to do a post about that day in 7th grade when we just decided to be best friends, and how it actually stuck. The women of ours are insane, pal. Insane.

The song you mention is called "General Hospi-tale." Alison has it on her 80s box-set. Hilarious.

You should watch a realistic soap like "Days of Our Lives." It was my guilty pleasure in college. Well, that and alcohol.
And "Sailing" by Kristopher Kross is one of the greatest songs ever. I think that should start the Friday music segment. "Arthur" would have been half the movie it was without that song.

Susan Chipley said...

Getto: I gave up Days about a year and a half ago. I couldn't devote 10 hours a week to soap watching. I totally agree with you on the Arthur thing even though I've never seen the movie.

rob: I'd pay $5 to see the Jukebox Zeros cover that song. I've never heard it before, but I'd pay the money just because of the song title.

geto boy: Wow. Wow. Really can't think of anything else to say!
