Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

I'm going to L.A. on Saturday for a few nights (mainly to attend this), so I'll start my day with Zep's "Goin' to California."

Who's got next? As always, links are really appreciated, and I'll respond to every suggestion.

I went running last night to one of my favorite playlists on my iPod and there was a great song on there that I thought, "Gotta tell Sleek about that one". hehe

"Shame" by Stabbing Westward is brilliant. Hell, listen to everything by Stabbing Westward - it's all brilliant. They're great Friday music =) "Save Yourself" is a lovely little ditty as well.

Here's a buffet of their videos to check out.

Have a great trip!!

The Bud Ekins event looks really cool, I trust you will take photos and post them here.
I got to go to the On Any Sunday reunion a couple of years ago in Long Beach, widest screen west of the Mississippi, all the stars were there, including Josh. zzzzzzzzz Did you see Joshies Endurocross pictures? I'll send you one soon.

Okay, let’s start off with some Brit stuff…

First up, The Twang.

Then we have Reverend and the Makers.

http://www.iamreverend.com/music/video/?id=5

Now, I watched that brilliant Scott Walker documentary the other day, so…

Which brings me straight to The Divine Comedy.

(Great lyrics in there!)

That’s all Bryan. I’m off out with Duncan on the beer and curry.

My new obsession. This is a little band from Chile called Mus .
You can listen to their songs on that website. I have their album from a disk that was sent in to our office for review. I love them. Pretty mellow, very lovely.

Still catching up on sleep... but I'll give you at least one. A little bit old but I'm still loving it.

Imogene Heap - Hide and Seek

It's my favourite Friday feature! Let's see: erm...

Bow Wow Wow: I Want Candy - 80s New Wave: bad hair, disruptive videos, catchy tunes.

1 Giant Leap: My Culture - From Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman's 2002 concept world music album, it features Maxi Jazz and Robbie Williams. Not much airplay for this one.

Whale: Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe - Sometimes I really miss the 90s. Raucous.

Joe Dassin: Les Champs-Elysees - After seeing the whimsical Darjeeling Ltd, I just had to share this.

Manic Street Preachers: Motorcycle Emptiness - People either love 'em or hate 'em. It's got the word "motorcycle" in it, so I thought I'd try it here.

Carmen McRae: I'm Going To Lock My Heart - Her behind-the-beat phrasing is excellent in this 1960s performance.

Kasabian: Cutt Off - The video's pretty awesome, isn't it? Kasabian's supposed to be the Oasis of the new generation.

Maps: To the Sky - Someday the gorgeousness of Maps will rule the world. According to Mute Records, James Chapman wrote the songs and recorded them on 16-track in his bedroom.

Thanks, everyone! I made it through most of this music today and can't wait to finish and comment. I'll get on it as soon as I can.

Oh, and geto boy, RIP indeed. I understand the phones in our office were ringing off the hook, and I got a bunch of e-mails from people about it in the span of a few minutes. Crazy.

Again I'm late, maybe Cheryl Crowes Ride like Steve McQueen because Bud did make that jump for him...Oh never ever trust toilets.

geto boy: That song sounded a lot better on Friday than it does today.

bad billy: As you know, I couldn't find that, so we listened to the NOFX that I do have.

Wow. I know I am always late on the Friday Music posts, But I have to give a special shout-out to TEOH. Whale, Hobo Humpig Slobo Babe....I have not thought about that song at all in what? 10 years? I don't know if I ever really liked it, but man, I remember being utterly intrigued by the song and the video. The 90s. Man. I wonder what the chick from Whale is doing now?

olive: "Californication" -- I like older RHCP much better, but this was definitely appropriate; LCD Soundsystem -- I like how this song slowly builds, layer after layer. I will definitely listen to more by these guys; Thievery Corp. -- the DM and I were supposed to see these guys open up for Radiohead at two show in D.C. a number of years ago, but both shows were rained out due to flooding. It was devastating. This cool song makes it even harder to deal with, all these years later. Has a middle-eastern feel to it, but it's also trip-hoppy. Cool; Hot Hot Heat -- I know this one well and like it. Thanks for the suggestions!

rob: I think you know how much I like the Ramones, and I thought someone might suggest this one. Thanks!

valyna: I listened to every Stabbing Westward song on that page -- thanks. I really like them, and I didn't realize they had so many songs I'd recognize. After I listened to them, I got the urge to listen to Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot" or whatever that song is called. A similar sound. Thanks!

mom: It was a grand time, and I will definitely do a post on it soon. I bet a lot of people in attendance were also at the On Any Sunday reunion. I did see Josh's photos, and they made me proud. You both have more guts than I do.

Matt: Twang -- love, love, love it. I shared it with J-Ko, and he was already familiar with it; Reverend -- man, everyone is on a roll today, because I like this one too. Dude has strange eyes, very intense at times. Thumbs up to the Guinness; Scott Walker -- must admit, I don't know this cat. Wow, it's like Tom Jones doing a number for an old-school western or something. Very, very interesting; I can't get the Divine Comedy thing to work. Give my best to Duncan -- I look forward to beer and curry with you guys the next time I'm in England.

melissavina: Mus -- I could only hear clips on that site, but I like. Trance-live, almost Mazzy Starrish. Thanks!

IF: Wow. I've heard of Frau Frau before -- I think on a past Friday Music post -- but this song surprised the hell out of me. The synthesizer matched her vocal melody and harmonies note by note for the entire song! I kept waiting for notes to stray, but they didn't. It has an a capella feel to it as a result. This is really unique and I dig it. Thanks!

teoh: Man, you really put a lot of effort into Friday Music! Much appreciated. Bow Wow Wow -- classic 80s song and video; 1 Giant Leap -- I love this one too. I always liked Robbie Williams. A proper pop star with a sense of humor; Whale -- hilarious, take the chick out and it sounds a bit like the Beastie Boys; Joe Dassin -- now there's a showman. Love the orchestra; Preachers -- afraid I've always fallen into the "hate" camp, but this one isn't too bad. Must be the motorcycle; Carmen -- classic, sophisticated, quite nice. This band is having fun!; Kasabian -- pretty cool. The video is Verveish and the song is very, very much like Kula Shaker, a defunct English band; Maps -- I like the whimsy of it. Nice. Thanks again, Teoh, excellent suggestions as usual.

missy: Welcome back! I spun the Chili Peppers with glee. Thanks!

clash: Thanks, pal. It's been fun, though I'm looking forward to getting home to the DM and the shorties tomorrow.

josh: Somehow I've never heard this song. Great video! They had two of those Bullet cars at the Ekins deal.

zee: Go read Teoh's blog and you'll find many more reasons to give him shout-outs.

That does it for this week. Thanks everyone! Feel free to add more to this post if you think of something before Friday.

Scott Walker is an American who came to London very early in his career (mid 60s) with The Walker Brothers - although they weren't brothers.

I think they split up late 60s but reformed for an album or two in the mid 70s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9QNlFrNL04

My mum and dad were big fans, so I think I listened to Scott a lot in my early years. I would have been called Joanna apparently if I had been born a girl...

There is a fascinating documentary, ‘Scott Walker - 30 Century Man’, just recently released about the now reclusive singer. Bowie, Eno and Jarvis Cocker all appear.

And here's the Divine Comedy link again. Scott was a big influence I guess...
