Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

I begin my day with rock. First, Clutch.

Then I move on to the Jukebox Zeros. Bass player Rob Zero and guitarist Zee are both regulars on RtN, and they're damn fine human beings to boot. We've used these guys a lot on our Racer X Films. Go check 'em out.

What else? (Any genre is fine.) Links are so appreciated that I mention it every week.

Woah, it's not Friday yet, buster.

But since I'm first. Let's kick it off with a little Indigo Girls.
One of my new favorites (albeit a bit gooey, but still nice on the ears)

Free in You.

Happy Friday!!!

I’ve been spinning The Hives’ new effort, The Black and White Album. Tick Tick Boom is a cool tune as is the rest of the album.

Woah, Friday's here early! But that's great, because it brings my favourite regular feature.

Hmm, let's see...

Camera Obscura: Teenager The song that first introduced me to this underrated band.

Arno Carstens: Another Universe Ex-frontman of the South African band The Springbok Nude Girls.

Fad Gadget: Collapsing New People The godfather of all subversive electronica - may he rest in peace (caution, the audio track on the link is really loud).

The Fratellis: Chelsea Dagger Crazy Scots. What's not to like?

The Parlotones: Astronauts & Dragonflies South Africa's premier indie band - plus it's an awesome video!

I'll start with the usual:
Bobby Conn
Skynrd (for Bad Billy)
Of course,Christopher Cross http://youtube.com/watch?v=j9NkBxxHxAc&feature=related

Getto: Wow, thanks. I'm always down for some Skynrd. Sweet Home Arkansas!

Sleek, pump some Flaming Lips. And Neil Young.

5 "go-tos" for me: Sonic Youth - Dayddream Nation never gets old Fugazi - Something I grew up with. Social Distortion - Classic Jets to Brazil - Pretty much have to burn these disk over and over because I wear them out in my car. Tapper Zukie - Reggae for the people, haha.

The entire 'Hymns of the 49th Parallel' by k.d. lang. She sings covers from other artists like Joni Mitchell. He voice is absolutely spectacular. Even if you've never been into her before, you'll like this.

Hey, I.F., if I want to get into kd Lang, which record would you suggest I listen to first (excluding the covers album, of course)? The only song I know is Calling All Angels from the Until the End of the World soundtrack, and that was a duet... a pretty good one, too.

Thanks, everyone -- I made it through everything, just in time to hit it for the weekend. I'll post responses at some point in the next couple of days.

KD Lang's voice really is pretty damned magical.

I know I am a little late but I was just reminded of this song. This guy is a sensational artist.

TEOH: To be honest, I'm not sure which of her albums are worth buying. I just have a bunch of random songs downloaded onto iTunes. The 49th Parallel album is worth every penny though... you wouldn't be disappointed.

melissavina: I find that if I post Friday Music on Thursday night, I usually have music to start my day with. I couldn't find that Indigo Girls song, but I found a cover of it on YouTube and it sounds like a great song. My favorite Indigo Girls song ever is their cover of Dire Strait's "Romeo and Juliet."

clash: Cool Hives song, I'll need to get the new album.

teoh: Another great contribution, thanks. Camera Obscura -- new to me, I like this song. Sorta bubbly and dreamy; Arno Carstens -- col song and I like the video, but it stops mid-song for some reason; Fad Gadget -- very new wave, psychotic video. It reminds me of something Bobby Conn would do; Fratellis -- these guys are regulars on Friday Music. Good stuff, I spun Chelsea Dagger and a couple other songs from their album; The Parlotones -- wow, this is a killer song. I think the verses are very contemporary, reminiscent of a Fratellis-type sound almost, but the chorus is full on '80s new wave. Great song and, like you said, awesome video. This is my favorite of your songs this week.

geto boy: Bobby was as gold as ever. We (Bad Billy and I) listened to the Skynrd show on Concert Vault, and I actually really liked it. They're no Neil Young, but they can definitely rock. And I gotta give to to Christopher Cross, he's still sounding like his old self.

bad billy: As you heard, since your desk is well within earshot of my office, I played "Fight Test" by the Lips, plus their weird cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head." As for Neil, that was his live CD from Massey Hall we were listening to.

seabass: Nice to see you back on Friday Music, you always make incredible suggestions. Sonic Youth -- new song for me, way lighter than I expected. Pretty cool. I really need to get into this band more; Fugazi -- "Waiting Room" is the Fugazi song I know best, and it's awesome. I'm going to go on a Fugazi kick next week, I think. That show looks fun; Social D -- "Ball and Chain" is such a catchy song; Jets to Brazil -- good song, makes me want to give these guys another chance; Tapper Zukie -- I finally gave this CD a spin, and it's cool. I don't know too much about reggae, but this reminded me of some of the stuff I heard back when I went to Jamaica in high school. It's now in my iTunes.

uty70: Man, I've always wondered about these guys; great suggestion, thanks! I played "Unsung" and it actually reminds me a little of Sabbath, vocally. "In the Meantime" is a little more hardcore, a lot different than the first song. I'm definitely going to explore this band further.

anon: I've like Andrew Bird since his last album, but seeing this live performance just got him on my must-see list; the Beaulah and Blitzen Trapper songs are both good, as are the performances. Great recordings too -- a big 3 for 3 this week. Thanks!

IF: Thanks, I like kd Lang. I checked out her versions of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Neil Young's "Helpless" -- both beautiful.

geto boy: "Bad Reputation" -- nice. This song is classic.

Pelt,
Your Sabbath reference just made me spit Oreo ice cream all over my keyboard. You know my complete distain for anything Ozzy. Why you got to mess with me, man? Can't we all just get along?

This is actually a Golden Smog song (not Wilco), but it's appropriate for the T-Giving season.
