Catfish Noodling

My brothers and their families were in this weekend, and my older brother, an experienced fisherman, told me about trout noodling. Have you ever heard of this? If not, or if you've never seen it, check this out:

I now have a new activity to add to the long list of things I hope to never experience in life.

"It's called 'cat grabbin', you sissy!" First of all, how do they call this a sport? And second, what the heck is up with the nesting box. You might as well throw some dynamite in the water. I saw a show on this a while back. These fools would stick their arms deep into a muddy river bank hole and pull out a catfish. What the?!? Let me just say that I probably hate catfish more than I hate Ozzy Osborne. I would rather kiss a wharf rat than touch a catfish.

Stick my hand in the mouth of a big, ugly catfish? F-that. I do think those guys seem pretty funny, though. I like their southern accents.

My grandpa used an old wind'em up telephone to get big catfish.

Sadly, I do have buddies in Kansas that have Noodled.

This ranks right up there with "spot lighting" where they drive around in their pick up trucks, with a spotlight, and then shoot whatever freezes when the light hits them.

Just think there had to be the first guy somewhere to try that. Not only try it, but be successful enough to teach others and for it to spread. Quite remarkable if you ask me.

Those cats were tiny. Check out this noodled cat.

"Okie Noodling" is a film that's played on the Documentary Channel about catfish noodling in Oklahoma.
The fish they're catching on your video are small to what they haul in on that film. Some of the guys don't wear gloves. One guy goes out by himself and wraps part of his hand in duct tape.

Bobby Sparks is the king by the way...

Or for a different flavor, here's noodling while Guns 'n' Roses is playing in the background.

BTW: That did make me You Tube Steve Earle's Copperhead Road which was is the background of Sleek's video.

Eric: Welcome to the Jungle, indeed. Har.

Yeah, I saw that Doc. Its pretty intense. There have been people who died doing this--not becuase they were eaten by a giant catfish, but becuase they get their arms stuck in a crevice and the tides rises up. What a crappy, crappy way to go.

I prefer doing my fighing with a Heddon Tiny Torpedo. Nothin' like watchin' a big 'ol bass break the surface of the calm water as it attacks your lure.

I would rather slam my head in the oven. In fact I think that is what I am going to do now ciao

Wow, that is effed up. You're wading around in murky, cold water, sticking your hands in a hole to catch at freaking Catfish. I wonder how many of these numbnuts are bitten by Water Moccasins every year...

Sleek: I'm curious how you ran across this. Oh wait, it was on Versus, so was it before or after a GNCC race at 3:00 a.m.?

Hattica: They "noodle" in Kansas? Interesting. And regarding "Spot lighting," I, in fact, have done that before back on the farm in PA. But it's usually done to locate deer in the weeks leading up to deer season. And it's illegal to shoot animals at night with a spot light. At least it is in PA.

JW: I'm with you.

geto boy: I thought the same thing when they talked about the nesting box. I say they reach their arm into holes in the mud or nothing at all! And I'd kiss the catfish before touching the wharf rat.

dm: Agreed, DM, agreed.

hattica: How did he catch catfish with an old wind 'em up telephone? This is pretty brutal. I mean, imagine the mama catfish coming back to check on things and finding papa long gone -- she probably thinks he just flew the coop!

clash: I thought the exact same thing! I always think that when I come across the crazy things that people eat and do. That noodled cat is huge -- he said 60 pounds anyway!

eric: Man, that is just crazy stuff.

zee: I forgot you were a fisherman! Have you been fishing lately?

josh: I'm with you, pal, though I rather reach into a hole to grab a catfish than to grab a wharf rat.

bad billy: I should hope it's illegal in every state!
