Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

Only it's Wednesday. But Friday is a holiday and most people probably won't be near a computer, so we're doing Friday Music on Thursday. Got it? Great.

My buddy Crusseldrums and his wife are expecting their second son any day now, so in honor of their growing family, this week's topic is: children.

Remember, it's linkin' park up in this joint. If you don't know how to make text into a link, just paste the URL after the suggestion.

We start with a rock anthem for the ages.

Happy Independence Day to you and all the other American RtN readers! I love ya, but you're a mad bunch. Don't drink and drive, people...

Martin L. Gore: Motherless Child - ignore the crappy HP fan video, and listen to this subtle, quiet and strange rendition of a classic blues track.

Iggy Pop: Real Wild Child (Wild One) - I usually enjoy his more subversive songs circa 1977's The Idiot, but sometimes his frivolous '80s tracks are simply more fun.

The Cardigans: Don't Blame Your Daughter - the most underrated band to ever come out of Sweden. This whole album is great.

Massive Attack: Risingson - apart from the title, not much to connect it to your theme. But crank up your speakers and be overawed by the immensity of what these guys have created.

This one may bring a tear to your eye.

Hope our kids don't end up like this.

My favorite Kids Band.

Also, any of you with kids should check out this blog, Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child. Look for their streaming playlists for some great kids music that mom and dad will dig too.

In the words of the immortal David Bowie: "I don't need a TV when I got T -REX"

Heartbreaking song. Brilliant video

This one never meant much until Alec was born

Not really about kids, but kids are mentioned in the song: Morning Bell

Again, not really about kids (that I can tell, anyway), but the title is: The Blower's Daughter

I couldn't resist this one, which I know reminds you of someone (a rather annoying someone) we knew in college: Daughter

Oh someone has already posted my suggestion, it was John Lennon. I love that!

But here's more: God Bless the Child!

And a song for a daughter.

Forgot to say thanks for posting Sweet Child of Mine and hope you're doing well Sleekpelt, you seemed a little down the other day.

Not uplifting, but it's about a child: "Luka" bySuzanne Vega

More Talking Heads, "Stay Up Late"

And this song has no video, not yet at least. So I post the lyrics to "Not Yet Three" by Jonathan Richman:

Could you sleep at a time like this?
Hearing Oldsmobiles traveling from town to town
I hear the older kids run past the trees in the mist
I hear them laugh in the breeze as the sun goes down
You think I should be fading now
That's because I'm not yet three
But my strength still ain't abating now
I'm stronger than you
You're simply bigger than me

Well, yonder the sun has turned the town bright yellow
I love twilight more than you do, Hello
You don't love twilight as much as me
Why don't you take the nap and let the baby be
You think I should be tired now
But my body's all inspired now
And yes it's true that I'm not yet three
But I'm stronger than you
You're simply bigger than me

Look, I sat up in my crib and you didn't like that
So now I have to lie down flat on my back
I can't get out of this thing
I can't get out of here
But if you think I'm sleeping, oh no, that's all mistaken
That's right
You think I should be dozing now
But my cheeks are still a rosing now
And yes it's true that I'm not yet three
It doesn't matter, I'm stronger than you
You're simply bigger than me

Well now if what you've done is grown up, I hate to clue ya
I just plain don't like you and I'm telling this to ya
You know about history and geometry
But you don't know enough to just let the baby be
And you think I should be tired now
That's because I'm not yet three
My body's all inspired now
In fact, I'm stronger than you
You're simply bigger than me
O.K.
Yes
la la la la

I love the comedian who points out that, in a televised collaboration, the London Symphony Orchestra needed their music notes, whereas Slash did not. He can apparently memorize the material.
