Reversing the Numbness

Friday Music

It's Friday. I need music.

You stumble out of bed half asleep and feel your way to the bathroom door. It's still dark outside, and you see nothing until you make your way to the light switch beside the sink. Your eyes reject the sudden burst of light and order your hands to shield them, to temper the light, to let it in gradually.

As your hands are finally allowed to drop to the sink, you look in the mirror. Only you don't see yourself. You see me. You scream, and so do I. You desperately drop your face into the sink and splash it with frigid water. You pause, but ultimately you look again, and you see the water dripping off of my face.

You test me. You feign to the left, duck, do a half spin, back again, then an impossible-to-predict mix of fluttering hands and facial expressions. But I'm with you, in real time.

So you give in. We cock our heads, then look up and slightly smile. We flair our nostrils ever so slightly, take a deep breath. You see that you're in control. We bow.

We hum a tune -- do you remember what? -- and then part forever.

Nothing wakes a man up better than a good shot of honest rock and roll. Try "Plenty for All" by Hot Snakes.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers is a good way to liven up your morning. "Hell" is a good 'un.
Or you could try The Presidents of the United States of America.

sombrero11: I've never heard of these guys, but I really like this song. Definitely honest rock 'n' roll. Nice and catchy, too. And, Josh, there's a pirate on the cover of the CD!

geto boy: I'm kicking the Presidents' "Munky River" now. This song is new to me, and it's not bad, though I've heard much better from this band. I'm on Pandora, so I'm going to play whoever comes next to. And it is ...

... "Helpless" by Moth. Hey, more honest rock 'n' roll. This is pretty good.

geto boy: I'm spinning "You're Driving Me Crazy" by Squirrel Nut Zippers. Cool throw-back stuff. It's funny how the girl singing actually does a '20s/'30s accent. I guess it just wouldn't sound right if she didn't.

I decided to let the Squirrel Nut Zippers station ride, too, and was treated to Madeleine Peyroux's "J'ai Deux Amours." Beautiful.

clash: I really dig Kaiser Chiefs "Ruby," and I've also listened to "It Ain't Easy" and "Hard Times Send Me." I had no idea these guys were so Tears for Fearsish! I also checked out "Sex Beat" off of Gun Club's Fire of Love album. Nice punky edge; I'd think Zee would like these guys. No I'll follow it with "I Want You," and I'm gonna let the Dylan ride for a while.

Matt handed me a CD yesterday by Cory Branan, and let me just tell you, it rules. 12 Songs just might be my next big CD. Anyone else familiar with this cat?

I always listen to some different stuff in the morning:

Mazzy Star: Fade into you

Alan Jackson: Midnight in Montgomery

Alanis Moressette: Everything

Guns and Roses: Estranged (good for rainy mornings like this one)

TOOL: 10,000 days part 2 (again, perfect for rainy mornings)

Wow, Hattica. Sleek and I listened to Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" on our first ummmm....date? I also LOVE "Estranged" by Guns and Roses.

That's all! I don't have any recs. The music I listen to is dictated by the kids, which you know is usually Joseph Arthur or Mull Historical Society. Sometimes I'll catch a break and the little guy will request some Angels and Airwaves.

SleekPelt said...

hattica: Tool was first, then I checked out that Morissette song. I like her, but that song was unfamiliar. It didn't impress me much at first, but when she kicks the song into gear it's pretty good. Then I went to "Estranged" and let GnR ride for a while. I'll leave the Alan Jackson to you, and DM and I will have to play "Fade Into You" later....

SleekPelt said...

dm: I'll take that as a request for Angels and Airwaves from young Jude.

I'm packing for my US trip as we speak, and listening to Peter, Bjorn and John, (especially 'Young Folks' - it's not often that whistling should be allowed in pop music...) who I guess you are familiar with, and a nifty little tune called 'Over and Over' by Hot Chip.

COL. BRUCE HAMPTON AND THE CODETALKERS - BODY IN THE LAKE - LIVE FROM BONNAROO!! A MUST LISTEN!!

SleekPelt said...

rob: I'm on Reigning Sound now, and based on your description of it being "brilliant," I'm going to do the entire CD. The first song, "Find Me Now," is most definitely Dylanesque, and kick-ass to boot. I can tell already that I'm going to love this.

SleekPelt said...

anon: I'll see if I can find those specific things, and if not, I'll find something close. Are you anonymous by choice, or do you not know how to set a screen name? I'm fine with the first and can help with the second.

matt a: I'll hit those boys up asap.
Can't wait to see you next week, pal!

SleekPelt said...

rob: It's nothing short of brilliant, I completely agree. Where has this been all my life?

SleekPelt said...

anon: I listened to Panic's "This Part of Town." It was okay. I've heard way better Panic songs, that's for sure. I can't find the Col. for some reason, but my boy Raoul Duke probably has it.

Col. Bruce's song is on bonnaroo 2002....this is a full on jam, with a great story. A guy almost gets car jacked, he closes his window on the muggers arm and drags the mugger to death, and then throws the body in the lake. Police find a body in the lake, the guy gets nervous, but it was a different body. He drinks a beer and says "whew!"

and its anon by choice, thx.... Body in the Lake gets regular airplay on Sirius' jam central. Everytime it comes on I crank it UP!!

You all make me feel very old.

I don't have clue about who these bands are or if they are new diseases.

I just try to make it easy on my self, one band, one web site, internet archive 3,200 Dead shows.

Along with my advance case of CRS (can't remember someting) I can listen to the same show day after day.

Yes I do love pirates. I spent much of my youth tied to Midnight Oil, Blue Sky Mining, I guess its vintage but I plugged it in and it still makes me shake my head like a white man. Track 9 as is 10 the ones missed on the radio are inspiring. Yes Mummies is right I feel like an old man when all these bands are mentioned...Who they? I axe? One of my favorites is Samuel Barbers "Adagio for Strings", played at a few presidential funerals I found it after I split with this hot babe years ago and had heard it on public radio, I had no idea who or what it was but I liked it, went to the record store found the Leonard Slatkin interpretation and found a bit of peace for awhile. What a sad and wonderful ditty.

Wwwwwhat? Try new? No way! Old and set in my ways, if it were good enough for Ken Kesey and Bill Walton it's good enough for me.

What ever my name is....

I wasn't near a computer until now so I missed the fun on this today, but after reading the very first post....nice! Hot Snakes was Speedo's band AFTER Rocket From The Crypt. And RFTC is in my top 3 all time favorite bands. By far and away. In fact, Sleek, although iuts late, be sure to spin RFTC's Scream Dracula, Scream sometime soon.

Mornin' Sleek.

I'm late for the Friday music, but hey, it's the weekend...

Here's a few favourite jazz albums, as promised;

Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots
McCoy Tyner - Inception
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way

I loved this post. I know that guy in the mirror...

Enjoy the weekend, mate.

josh: I like Midnight Oil, but I haven't listened to them in years. I'll check 'em out again tomorrow.

mom: Put those two together and you'd have one interesting basketball game.

zee: I really need to listen to those guys -- you love them! Tomorrow.

winters: I'm so uninitiated into the world of jazz. I'm looking forward to exploring, starting with these suggestions. And thanks, mate!
