It's Friday. I need music.
This week's topic is: goodbye.
Everyone is encouraged to post music suggestions that somehow fit this category. Please include links to your suggestions.
We'll be on a family vacation starting this weekend, so I'm not sure when I'll post comments on the suggestions, but I will at some point.
I'll start with this classic:

Madonna: The Power of Goodbye - servicable track from what amounted to a William Orbit record with Madonna vocals.
Franz Ferdinand: Walk Away - given less credit than they're due, this band is very skilled at what they do.
Yazoo: Don't Go - known as Yaz in the States. Still one of the most infectious pieces of pop perfection ever crafted.
Annie Lennox: Everytime We Say Goodbye - an interesting Cole Porter interpretation from the sought after Red Hot + Blue charity soundtrack.
The End
This song has made me tear up since I first heard it in "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas". (written by the amazing Paul Williams)
Wow... this guy is truly missed!
The genius of Ric Ocasik...
I couldn't find my favorite version of this, but the original will do.
Let's stick with a theme.
The Bravery - This Is Not The End
Why do I always come up with the most annoying tracks? :)
So long, honey, so long, have a good vacation!
here's tracks... not very uplifting but both fall well into the 'goodbye' theme! *d
Junior Boys - 'So This Is Goodbye'
the whitest boy alive - done with you
Sufjan Stevens: Casimir Pulanski Day

Jim Carroll: People Who Died

Billy Holiday: Travelin' Light

Going OLD school for this one.
Danke Schoen!
Time to Say Goodbye!
Damn, EOH already posted the Franz Ferdinand song. That's a really good one!
Beck -- "Lost Cause"
Your sorry eyes cut through the bone
Make it hard to leave you alone
Leave you here wearing your wounds
Waving your guns at somebody new
Guster -- "Amsterdam"
I threw away your greatest hits
You left them here the day you split
Your bass guitar and shaggs CD
Well they don't mean that much to me right now
I'm going through your things
These days, I'm changing all my strings
Dirty Vegas -- "Walk Into The Sun"
Lately I've been feeling different
Like I've come from outer space
And I know there's something missing
When it's you I can't replace
the Dandy Warhols --
"You Were The Last High"
So I am alone but adored
By a hundred thousand more
Than I said when you were the last (high)
And I have known love
Like a whore
From at least ten thousand more
Than I swore when you were the last
Know I've been MIA and that this comment has nothing to do with your posting... but... in case you're interested, our travel blog is up and running while we're away. Peace - IF

Aww, Sleek - where's the new Friday Music? You don't even have someone to cover for you. Oh well, guess I'll just play alone. Erm, lessee... in keeping with the current "goodbye" theme, let's go with songs about longing, wanting and missing someone or something. Like these:
Marvin Gaye: I Want You - here's an interesting live version.
Everything But The Girl: Missing - not the club mix, I promise.
INXS: I Need You Tonight - this went to no. 1 on the US Hot 100 way back in 1987.
Way to pick up the slack Teoh! You're a real team player, and that my friend, is good business.
Sticking with my "old school" theme:
Connie Francis
A more recent one:
Concrete Blonde
And one that's kinda funny:
Cake
Helen Mansfield, thank you for Connie Francis - that totally made my morning! That Concrete Blonde song somehow epitomizes the mystique of songs composed at the interface between the '80s and '90s. And would you believe that a year ago I'd never even heard of the grooviness that is Cake? Sad, I know.
Thanks for filling in for me, guys -- I've been out of it lately, but I'll be back to respond to last week's suggestions sometime this week.
Good to hear from you Sleek. I was beginning to think "goodbye" was your coy way of telling all of us to fuck off.
Your friend in Christ,
Helen
I had to retry the link:
Perhaps no one is a fan of this anymore, but it still brings back good memories for me. And, I still dig it!
Goodbye defined…
Here's a dreary one from the Alan Parsons Project calledOld and Wise
I like alot of what Allan Parsons did, Dark Side of the Moon was strong work. Now I do suggest Happy Birthday which is coming up Sept 14, not to many shopping days left.

Lots of great music here, and I've spun it all, but alas, I just haven't been able to find the time to respond. I realize the weakness of this, and I will still respond, but I'm not going to get it done before this week's Friday Music post.
Oh, and welcome, Lyle's Blues! I'm usually much better at playing along in my own game. Hopefully you'll return.
I don't know how to make the fancy links, but:
The Stars: Your Ex Lover is Deadhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2yJSFHTrgM
Leggy Blonde - Flight of the Conchords
teoh: Madonna -- I like this okay. I don't know why, but the highlight of the song for me is the way she says "learn"; Franz -- great song. The singer in this song reminds me of our creative director, Langers; Yazoo -- is this an encore? It's a little sassy for my tastes; Annie Lennox -- beautiful song, and I welcomed the accordion.
crusseldrums: Beatles -- Bringin' the juice off of one of the greatest albums ever. I love that guitar tone; Henson memorial -- sounds very much like a hymn I would have heard in church as a kid. I can hear a congregation doing this now; Jeff Buckley -- this is more like church to me now; Cars -- pop music just doesn't get much better. Mainstream music just ruled in the '80s.
rob: Bob -- this is the first version of this song I ever heard, and it's one of the songs that made me get him; Johnny and June -- another classic version. I think it's interesting to watch June throughout this performance. She does some odd things with her right arm and her head, I think.
matthew: Welcome! I hope my slow response time this round doesn't keep you from playing along again. I've heard of the Bravery before, but I don't think I've actually heard them, and I really like this song. I will definitely check out more of their stuff.
devil mood: Brotherhood of Man -- Annoying? Huh? Try freaking brilliant. Try the greatest dancing I've ever seen.
day: Junior Boys -- I've never heard of these guys before. Interesting. Spacey and retro; Whitest Boy Alive -- you brought this cat to the table once before and I dug it. I'd put anyone in Brotherhood of Man up against him anytime. They're much whiter.
tüth+gnail: Sufjan Stevens -- wow, he looks different than I expected. He's lucky to play with so many friends. This is the kind of music I'll listen to early in the morning when nobody is in the office and I have a large cup of excellent coffee; Jim Carroll -- I love this song, but to cement my uncoolness, I'll confess that I didn't know anything about it until after The Basketball Diaries; Billie Holiday -- I'm really loving her lately. Nice play on this topic.
helen mansfield: Wayne Newton -- I'm flabbergasted. I've heard this song a hundred times and I just assumed Wayne Newton had a female singer doing vocals who wasn't credited for some reason. I'm floored that it's actually Wayne Newton singing; Brightman/Bocelli: well, that's some serious singing. I don't know much about opera, but I think I like the classic stuff better.
rebecca: Beck -- Nice, I like Sea Change. I saw him play in Pittsburgh once and he got down; Guster -- a super-catchy song, and I love the video. I think it seems like a theme song. I really need to get some Guster; Dirty Vegas -- hmm. I think it was unfortunate for this song to follow "Amsterdam"; Dandy Warhols -- I really like this. I've read more about than band than I've listened to;
teoh: Marvin Gaye -- that is definitely interesting; Everything but the Girl -- thanks for not posting the club mix!; INXS -- yeah, that song was just massive.
helen mansfield: Connie Francis -- this song makes me think of an ad campaign, sadly; Concrete Blonde -- I would've like to have seen these guys back in the day; Cake -- This is easily my favorite Cake album, and this is one of the most memorable songs from it.
lyle: Wow, Ozzy? I love when someone busts out Ozzy on Friday Music. I typically prefer the Ozzy without synthesizers, but still.
clash: Yeah, I'm with you.
helen: Alan Parsons Project -- I can't say it better than Josh did.
sheryl: Welcome! Stars -- The number of incredible bands that have been spawned by Broken Social Scene is amazing. I really like this song.
keith: Chonchords -- What an awesome way to close things down. These guys crack me up.
