WV native, John Corbett. He's from Wheeling. Starred in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Northern Exposure," etc. Good music for an actor.

ReplyDeleteGood John Corbett story: On Northern Exposure, he played an ex-con who was in the WV penitentiary for a time. On the Thanksgiving episode, all the displaced Alaskans were calling their families in the continental US. Corbett's character had no family, so he pondered and struggled about whom to call. He gets on the phone in the last few minutes of the show and places a call. The person answers the phone saying, "West Virginia Penitentiary. May I help you?" Corbett's character asks to speak to the warden, Mr. Vilietta. In the show, it is a touching scene, this nice guy with a drak past calling his only family- his old warden. If you are from Wheeling you know that Corbett went to Wheeling Central Catholic High School. The principal there is . . . Mr. Vilietta. Hahahaha.

i'm a big John Corbett fan. probably in my top 3 list of actors. like I said, his music is okay, but he always plays really cool, likable characters.

I heard an interview with him this morning on WV Pub. Radio. He's been doing the music thing for the past couple of years. His band is in Fayetteville for a benefit this Saturday nite.
He said his character in No. Exp. was supposed to play a guy from St. Louis, but he asked the writers if that really made a difference. They said no, so they let him do the WV thing and apparently, from what mungerphut said, gave him some other artistic liberties.

ReplyDeleteanon: That's some list, anon, thanks for the links -- that makes it much easier. I've watched/listened to all suggestions. Right off the bat I'm very interested in Gogol Bordello. I like the Eastern European thing they have going on, and the dude singing reminds me of The Pogues' Shane MacGowen. Can't wait to hear more. I'm familiar with most of these bands -- Kings of Leon, Gomez and BMRC are cool. I've heard the buzz about Paolo Nutini but this is the first time I've really listened; I really like "Jenny Don't Be Hasty." That's a killer song. I'm a big Tegan and Sara fan, and I like this new album a lot, but I'm not wild about "Back in Your Head." Kind of a cool video, though. I've never listened to Justice and I really like "D.A.N.C.E." -- that's good stuff. I didn't look for Ween, but I go way back with that band. I even interviewed Dean Ween for my magazine a number of years ago. I still need to catch those dudes in concert, though.

ReplyDeletemungerphut: Thanks for the suggestion. I know that guy's huge in country music now but I've never listened to him before. I checked his MySpace page and I can see why he's so popular. Not really my thing, but I like it better than a lot of other popular country music I've heard.

I'm with you on the John Corbett, Spooge. I watched NE religiously and "Chris" is still one of my favorite TV characters to this day.
ReplyDeleteInteresting thread - Seuss to Bicycle to Floyd to Syd Barrett to one of my favorites - Daniel Johnston, who is a unique folk artist struggling with mental illness and grew up in WV; even a patient at Weston Mental Hospital while being sought by Elektra. It was his Tshirt that Cobain wore on every TV appearance in early 90s. Has been covered by Wilco and others. chud: I'm a big fan of Daniel Johnston. I've yet to see that movie, sadly, but I've wanted to for some time. My favorite song of his is "Funeral Girl," which we'd spontaneously play loudly in our office back in the day for a little comedic/tragic break. I also like that tribute album, which is loaded with great renditions.
